What is Osteopathy?

Knee injury

Osteopathy is a form of hands-on medicine combining various types of treatment such as manipulation, massage and visceral techniques as well as a very gentle but profound palpation (touch) called cranial osteopathy. Osteopathy is a holistic therapy, so osteopaths treat the whole person. This means that if you come to us with, for example, back or knee pain, we will treat the area causing pain but also treat you as an individual and try to rectify the source of the problem rather than the symptom alone.

Cranial osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle and effective technique that involves very subtle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body, suitable for all ages from newborn babies to the elderly. The term, cranial osteopathy, is misleading, as it does not involve only the cranium (head). Cranial osteopathy is an effective treatment to help alleviate the symptoms caused by migraines, headaches and jaw dysfunction, especially following extensive dental work.

Albert Road Osteopaths Tamworth

Albert Road Osteopaths was established in 1984 by Jane Easty to provide osteopathy to the people of Tamworth and the surrounding areas. Patients come from as far afield as Walsall, Nuneaton, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield. We are proud to say that the vast majority of our new patients come to us by GP or health visitor referral, or by personal recommendation from existing patients. We commonly treat several generations in families from babies of a few days to the elderly.

We have 5 osteopaths who work as a team offering a range of osteopathic treatments to patients of all ages and all levels of fitness. Collaborative learning is an important feature of our practice and at times, when we encounter a problem that does not resolve as expected the osteopath may suggest a consultation with 2 osteopaths. This does not cost the patient more than normal treatment but it means that the patient has the benefit of 2 health care professionals while the osteopaths have the opportunity of sharing their experience.

Many people relate osteopathy to back pain but this is only a part of what we do – what is osteopathy? Osteopaths treat individuals rather than just conditions and take into account all aspects of a patient’s history, health and lifestyle before diagnosis and treatment.
